In October, VIGO started work on a new project co-financed by the European Union – EMPHASIS project entitled: “Explosive Material Production, Hidden Agile Search and Intelligence System”.

The goal of the EMPHASIS project is to test a system concept for the surveillance tool of tomorrow for detection and localization of illicit bomb factories in urban areas. The system will be composed of many detectors in a network, to monitor air and sewage. All gathered data taken from sensors will be sent to the command center where it will be analyzed on an ongoing basis. If a threat substance is detected, information about the type, location, time and amount will be immediately available in the command center and appropriate actions is performed without time loss.

The project consortium consists of the following companies and institutions: FOI (project coordinator), Cascade Technologies, Fraunhofer IAF, Fraunhofer ICT, INPS, Portendo, Safran Morpho, TNO and VIGO Photonics S.A.

We started the HYPERION project in August 2012 and its goal is to create a broad-spectrum system for identifying improvised explosives: “Hyperspectral Imaging IED and Explosives Reconnaissance System”.

The goal of the project is to develop and test a system concept for crime scene analysis. The HYPERION system will provide information about the type and amount of used explosive and point of detonation. Additionally, it will be possible to locate unexploded or suspicious materials at the site of the bomb attack.

The project consortium consists of the following companies and institutions: FOI (project coordinator), Aselsan, BKA, Turkish National Police, Fraunhofer IAF, Safran Morpho, Portendo, SKL, Selex, Tecnalia, TNO and VIGO Photonics S.A.

MEMFIS plans to show the feasibility of a miniature spectroscopic chemical sensor system based on a micro-FT-IR spectrometer. Based on mid-infrared spectroscopy offering analyte selectivity unrivalled by any other method and paired with the inherent sensitivity of a FT-IR spectrometer, such devices could be used in a wide range of applications, from air monitoring over in-line real-time process control to security monitoring. The spectrometer utilises innovative optical components based on MEMS-technology, leading to very compact and rugged spectroscopic devices with ultra-rapid scanning capabilities.

The addition of a miniature source and a dedicated, highly sensitive detector completes the spectrometer module. Adding electronics and data evaluation and providing a standardised interface to various different modern IR probes, the MEMFIS spectrometer will present a very powerful spectroscopic sensor and a significant step forward in the smart spectroscopic sensors, microsystems technology and vibrational spectroscopy in general.

The aim of this project was to transfer the latest advances in plasmonics achieved in the visible to the mid-IR. The main objectives of the project are:

  1. To look at the fundamental limits and develop new simulation tools for plasmons in the mid-IR,
  2. To develop plasmon enhanced surfaces for spectroscopic chemical sensing (SCS),
  3. To use plasmon enhanced surfaces for light harvesting technology.

The term plasmonics refers to the investigation, development and application of enhanced electromagnetic properties of metallic (nano-) structures and is starting to find applications in a range of photonic devices such as VCSELs and high speed photodetectors.
